What is email marketing?

Definition

Sending commercial or informational email to a list of people who agreed to hear from you: newsletters, promotions, nurture sequences, and transactional messages like receipts and reminders. Unlike a social following, the list is an asset you own outright and can reach without a platform deciding who sees it.

What it looks like in practice

A med spa collects emails at booking and splits the list by what people came in for. Botox clients get one message at the ten-week mark: a reminder that results are starting to soften, with a link to rebook. Facial clients get a seasonal note about winter skin and a package offer. Everyone gets a short monthly email with one before-and-after and one aftercare tip, no offer attached, so the list stays warm between visits. New consult no-shows get a single gentle re-invite, then nothing. The front desk sees rebookings land in the calendar without anyone making a call.

Why it matters

Email is one of the few channels a small business actually owns. Nobody can change an algorithm and cut your reach overnight, and the cost does not climb with the size of the list. That makes it the natural tool for turning one-time buyers into repeat ones and for waking up people who already know you. The risk is wearing out your welcome: send too often, or send offers that ignore what someone bought, and you train people to delete on sight. A burned list is slow to rebuild, so segmentation matters more than volume; fewer, more relevant sends beat a weekly blast to everyone.
