What is local SEO?

Definition

Search engine optimization focused on ranking for location-based queries like 'plumber near me.' It is anchored by your Google Business Profile, consistent name-address-phone listings across directories, geographic signals on your own pages, and a steady flow of reviews: the inputs that decide who appears in the local map results.

What it looks like in practice

An auto detailer in Tempe claims his Google Business Profile and fills in what was blank: exact service area, hours including Saturday, categories set to 'car detailing service' rather than 'car wash,' and photos of finished cars with the shop visible behind them. He adds ceramic coating and headlight restoration as individual services, each with a price range, and turns on messaging so people can text from the listing. Then he asks every customer at pickup to leave a review mentioning what they had done. Within a season, searches for 'ceramic coating near me' start surfacing his listing in the map pack with a booking button attached.

Why it matters

For most small service businesses this is the highest-leverage marketing there is, because the search that matters ('detailer near me,' 'med spa Boulder') happens at the moment someone is ready to hire. Local SEO decides whether you appear in the three-result map pack or on page two, and the map pack is where the calls come from. The work is unglamorous and never finished: listings drift out of date, competitors add categories, and reviews go stale, which search engines read as a signal in itself. It also fails quietly if nobody answers the phone the listing generates; ranking well and missing calls is an expensive combination.
