What is speed to lead?

Definition

The elapsed time between a lead's inquiry and the first sales response. Faster speed-to-lead is one of the strongest predictors of conversion, leads contacted within 5 minutes convert at much higher rates than those contacted an hour later. It is measured from the moment the inquiry lands, not from when someone notices it.

What it looks like in practice

A homeowner's AC quits on a July afternoon. She searches, finds several HVAC companies nearby, and fills out the contact form on each of them. One company answers within minutes, confirms the unit's brand, and offers an evening slot that same day. Another calls back after dinner and finds the job already booked. The last one calls the next morning. Nothing about the slower ones was worse: comparable equipment, comparable pricing, comparable technicians. The only difference was who reached her while she was still sitting in a hot house with her phone in her hand.

Why it matters

Speed to lead matters because someone who just left a voicemail or filled out a form is usually shopping several businesses at once, and their attention fades quickly. For a service business, calling back first often wins the job outright, regardless of price. The hard part is structural: inquiries arrive while the owner is under a sink, on a roof, or asleep, which is exactly when nobody is free to answer. That's why after-hours coverage or an automated first response tends to pay for itself, not because the first reply closes the deal, but because it buys the conversation that does.
